The Effects of an Extract of Sea Buckthorn Berry On the Proliferation of Adult Stem Cells

Sea buckthorn berry is a small orange fruit that is packed with nutrition, plant polyphenols, and antioxidants. Sea buckthorn berry extract has many purported health benefits, and it is a supplement that has been embraced by the antiaging community.

A recently published study in the journal Clinical Intervention in Aging was designed to evaluate if the effect that sea buckthorn berry extract seems to have on adult stem cells could account for some of its disease prevention and antiaging properties.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a proanthocyanidin-rich extract of sea buckthorn berry (SBB-PE) on the numbers of various types of adult stem cells in the blood circulation of healthy human subjects.

Key Takeaways From This Study:

  • Consumption of SBB-PE resulted in selective mobilization of stem cell types involved in regenerative and reparative functions.
  • The study validates the long-standing traditional use of sea buckthorn berry in health maintenance, as well as disease prevention and treatment, and provided a possible mechanism of action for its medicinal properties.
  • Stem cell mobilization, as occurred with the use of sea buckthorn berry extract in this study, has been documented to improve cases of severe cardiomyopathy, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, kidney failure, and Parkinson’s disease.
  • The study suggests that could sea buckthorn berry extract may be a novel natural stem cell mobilizer with the potential of improving the course of several degenerative diseases.

I have found sea buckthorn to be very effective in helping injuries heal faster and after workouts so that aching muscles are not as sore. The difference is tangible.

Other studies have confirmed that sea buckthorn generates higher levels of stem cells within a couple of hours of taking it.
